Electrolytes The Secrets Of The Salts In Water
Eliya’s King Coconut Water is made from the orange nut that grows naturally in Sri Lanka. The King coconut has many health benefits when compared to other fruits. One such benefit would be the number of electrolytes in the water.
Electrolytes in King coconut water help keep a balance of fluids between the inside of a body cell and the outside of a body cell. Having a balance in fluids is important to ensure that nerve impulses and muscle functions work and that the pH level is maintained.
Just what constitutes as an electrolyte, though?
First of all, any liquid that conducts electricity is known as an electrolyte solution. For example, mixing table salt (NaCl) in water creates a saltwater solution of Na+ and Cl- ions.
Here are some electrolytes and why they are important for the body.
Sodium (Na+) : Sodium in healthy amounts helps regulate muscle control and controls blood pressure. Low blood sodium, or hyponatremia, can lead to headaches, muscle cramps, and nausea.
Potassium (K+) : Potassium helps the heart beat at a steady, consistent rate and maintains muscle function. Hypokalemia is when the level of potassium in the blood is too low, which can lead to muscle twitches, abnormal heart rhythms, and adrenal gland disorders where hormones are not being produced adequately.
Chloride (Cl-) : Chloride helps the metabolism function correctly. In addition, chloride combines with hydrogen in the stomach to make hydrochloric acid, a digestive enzyme that helps break down proteins, absorbs other metallic minerals, and helps with the activation of intrinsic factor, which in turn absorbs vitamin B12. Low chloride (hypochloremia) is a cause of dehydration and fluid loss.
Calcium (Ca2+) : 99% of calcium is stored in the bones. Low calcium levels can lead to weaker bones.
Magnesium ( Mg2+) : Magnesium is produced in the kidneys and acts as a cofactor in many of the body's enzyme activities. Magnesium is also closely linked to sodium, potassium, and calcium metabolism. Low magnesium levels (Hypomagnesemia) can cause sleepiness, personality changes, and higher anxiety, and in extreme cases can lead to seizures.
Phosphate (HPO4-) : Phosphate helps with tissue growth and repair, and is an important part of building cell membranes and DNA. Low phosphate levels are common with Crohn’s or celiac disease. Symptoms include joint pain, shallow or unsteady breathing, and weakened bones.
Bicarbonate (HCO3-) : Bicarbonate serves as a buffer to regulate pH levels in the body. A low amount of bicarbonate means that acids produced naturally, such as lactic acid in the muscles, cannot be counteracted. Over time this can damage tissue located near the central nervous system.
There are necessary things we all must do every day to maintain a healthy lifestyle, including intaking enough electrolytes. Luckily, it’s not too challenging to reach those daily amounts.
