Bicarbonate (HCO3-) : Bicarbonate serves as a buffer to regulate pH levels in the body. A low amount of bicarbonate means that acids produced naturally, such as lactic acid in the muscles, cannot be counteracted. Over time this can damage tissue located near the central nervous system.
